  1. This gave me a good laugh. I hope I understand you correctly, if not then everything else I’ll say might not make sense. But yeah, retro games can get really, how do I say this, weird? The most reasonable explanation I can think of is that back then, they were just creating ideas and formula that can work. You can say that the developers or the gaming industry is at its exploratory phase. There will be experiments which can result to total failure. That said, of course, there will be successful ones.

Now, today’s games are just based of the ideas of the successful 80s or 90s games. They use the same basic formula, just “evolved” to perfection. A perfect example would be Mario and Pokemon. Anybody who played the first generation of Mario and Pokemon would know exactly what I’m talking about. I’m quite surprised how much they have improved today, but they are still using the same basic formula!

  2. Oh man, all these old games. Pretty nostalgic to think of a time when I didn’t use electronic to entertain myself. But still, these game were a gateway for me into a larger world and a great way to expand my imagination. Nothing wrong with dipping back into them from time to time I would think!

  3. What no Grandstand consoles or Space Invaders? Where’s Pong? Those so-called retro games are positively modern! (kidding!)

Some of those consoles on that slideshow brought back memories, and with so many of the games available either on modern consoles or through emulation, some of those titles still have life in them. I think there’s a certain charm to a game that can be summed up as “bounce the red blob over the green blobs til you get to the blue blob”. It doesn’t mean I’m not waiting for the next PS4 release though!

  4. Retro will never die thanks to emulators.
Every Amiga, Sinclair or Amstrad title in my pocket on my phone, living the dream!
Not quite the same playing space invaders without the clumpy control sticks or thick buttons like in the old arcades, but good enough 🙂

  5. I think that if you are of the generation who first played video games, (the 70’s and 80’s crowd) you probably feel a huge twinge of nostalgia when you see an actual Tron game, or Pong, or Asteroids, all of which were state of the art at one time or another. This is why retro games exist at all, for those who remember the originals and wish they could go back in time for just a few moments to play them again. If there’s a market for something, the clever marketer will find it and fill it.
